Keeping Your Oven Clean
5 commentsCleaning the oven in the stove is the most dreaded of all jobs in the kitchen. The worst is food that has been baked over and over until it is black. We tend to ignore those spots and spills until we notice odors that shouldn’t be there. But what are the best ways to clean your oven?
Mix up a paste of baking soda and water. Use a damp cloth to put it on the walls and bottom of your oven. This should sit for about 12 hours before you attempt to clean it off.
Mix up a paste that includes ¼ cup powder detergent and one cup vinegar. Heat oven to 350 degrees and then shut it off. Apply the paste and leave it for one hour. You can then scrape off any debris. An alternative is to mix a cup of vinegar with ¼ cup detergent.
The oven must be shut off for this one. Place ½ cup ammonia in the oven and shut it. Overnight, the ammonia will work to loosen baked-on debris as well as grease. In the morning, you can easily wipe it clean. Note: Not recommended for gas stoves, unless the pilot light is out.
For self-cleaning ovens, cleanup is less of a problem. However, you should still use soapy water to clean areas that don’t come clean. Tough spots may need one of the above pastes.
For a continuously clean oven, you may have to give it a once over now and then with a wet sponge. There are things you can do to avoid having to tackle a dirty and greasy oven. As soon as you notice that food or grease has spilled, let the oven cool and wipe it up. One trick is to pour salt on the spill. Add a bit of water and let it work for about an hour.

How To Use Your Oven Safely
Be the first to commentModern appliances are now just everyday items in our kitchen and they make our lives easier. However, when it comes to using the oven in a stove, safety must always be your first priority. Here are a few things you can do to ensure everyone’s safety:
-
Make sure the oven is not plugged into an outlet where other appliances will be used. Too many fires result from outlets with two or more major appliances plugged into them. Also, be sure you have used the correct size of fuse in the breaker, so the power will automatically shut down if there is an overload.
-
Make sure the cord is not damaged.
-
Always wear oven mitts that come up past your wrists when using the oven. Also, make sure they’re dry, so they don’t conduct heat.
-
When baking items that require a short heating time, don’t leave them unattended in the oven.
-
Only put oven-safe cookware in the oven.
-
Make sure children and pets are out of the way before opening a hot oven door. Use a safety gate, if necessary.
-
Let children know that what you bake or broil is hot and could burn them.
-
Older children must still be supervised when putting things in the oven or taking them out.
-
You must have a smoke alarm in or near your kitchen. Be sure to test it at least once a month and replace the batteries, if necessary.
-
In case of an accident, it would be most helpful if at least one family member has learned first aid.
-
Clean up grease spills immediately, as grease is the number one cause of fire.
-
In case of fire, don’t douse with water. Shut the oven off and close the door immediately. You could try to smother it with a cookie sheet or lid. You can also try dousing a contained fire with baking soda or some other dry item. If all else fails, grab the fire extinguisher or leave the house and call the fire department.
-
Place a portable fire extinguisher within easy reach from the stove and make sure you know how to use it.
-
Don’t use the oven if you are on strong medication or drank too much.
-
Don’t use your electric or gas oven for heat during the winter months.
-
Never place flammable item in a hot oven, such as paper towels and pizza boxes.
-
If something is causing steam in the oven, it will be hot and come right up to your face when you open the door. Make sure you stand to one side before doing so.

Everyday Maintenance of Major Appliances
Be the first to commentYou have a lot of appliances in your home, and performing small everyday maintenance tasks can potentially save you large appliance repair bills. Often when someone says “appliance”, it evokes images of blenders and toasters. But major appliances don’t sit on counters. They are refrigerators, ovens and ranges, washers and dryers, air conditioners and furnaces.

Each major unit in your house needs regular maintenance in addition to professional appliance maintenance. With frequent home maintenance it’s often possible to anticipate or prevent major outages which can disrupt your life and create high appliance service bills. There are a variety of routine maintenance jobs that don’t take much time, but will keep your appliances humming efficiently.
Maintaining a Kenmore or Sears dishwasher is typical of the care all dishwashers need. You should watch for mineral deposits that can accumulate inside the dishwasher. Also watch for weakened rubber hoses.
Refrigerators need to always have free air circulation around the coils and condenser. Dirty coils on any refrigerator, whether it’s a Kelvinator or a Whirlpool or any other brand, will seriously impact the ability of the unit to maintain cold temperatures.
Ovens, from the less expensive Frigidaire to the more expensive Wolf, must be kept clean. Baked on food can cause the heating element to overload.
You should make sure the gaskets on dishwasher, refrigerator and oven doors are always flexible and unbroken. Broken seals impact the ability of the unit to maintain cold or hot temperatures. This can quickly shorten the life of the appliance making it work much harder than should be necessary.
Washer and dryers must be kept clean and free of lint and dust also. Always clean the lint catchers every time you wash or dry. Make sure the venting hose on the dryer is properly installed too. This is a frequent problem in homes, because owners forget to look behind the dryer to make sure the venting hose is still connected. An accumulation of lint behind the dryer can become a fire hazard. Also, a vent that is jammed between the wall and dryer can end up shutting off the venting and the moist air has nowhere to go. You’ll know when this happens, because your clothes won’t dry.
Of course, air conditioners and furnaces must be maintained also. Appliance parts for these units can be expensive if something major, like a compressor, stops working. Furnace and air conditioning filters must be changed regularly. When they become clogged with dust, the motors are forced to overwork. Coils must be vacuumed and all outside air circulation vents kept free of debris.
Air conditioners and furnaces, like the Carrier and Bryant, are typical of most units. Ductwork must be kept clean and all hoses and belts kept in working order. Though you can keep air flow free of obstruction, some professional appliance maintenance should be scheduled periodically.
