What’s The Big Deal With A Range Hood?

Be the first to comment

Most people realize that the air in their homes is often more polluted than the air outside. Installing a range hood in the kitchen will help filter some of that air. There are other advantages to having a range hood as well, including:

  • keeping walls from getting greasy

  • helping to eliminate peeling of paint from the walls

  • eliminating musty smells from carpets, curtains or other items

  • eliminating the smell from foods that you cook or bake

  • removing smoke and/or steam

  • helping to eliminate the odor of toxic chemicals used for cleaning

  • getting rid of potentially hazardous carbon dioxide.

  • taking moisture and hot air out of the room

To ensure that your range hood works properly, it should be installed about 24 inches from the top of your range. If you purchase a hood with a very strong fan, it can be upwards of 30 inches. The hood should ideally vent air to outside the house. The best are metal, ducted hoods. Ductless hoods perform similar tasks, but send the air past a filter and then re-circulate it back into the room. If you have one of these, you need to change the filter about every six to twelve months.

Metal filters can be washed and put back in.  Some ductless hoods can also be converted, so they vent the air to the outside. No matter what type you have, never send a duct into your attic or garage, as pollutants, grease and moister will collect there. However, duct extensions that can go to the chimney are available. range hoodWhen looking for a range hood, you need to be sure it has enough power to filter any pollutants from your kitchen.

You also need to take into consideration both the size you need and how loud it operates. The hood should be the length of your range or longer.  You must also buy the duct in the appropriate size. If it is too small, airflow will be restricted. When you install it, try to avoid having a long and winding duct, as this will also affect performance.  For proper maintenance, you need to keep your range hood clean. Grease in particular can become a fire hazard. When you purchase a hood, ask if it has a surface that is easy to clean.   Some hoods also have lights for more convenience. Some have timers that shut the fan off after a certain amount of time. Some hoods tuck neatly under your cabinets and only need to be slid out when necessary and there are also hoods that can be installed above islands. Hoods today also come in a variety of styles. Some are stainless steel, copper and some are even tile. You can even get a hood in a paneling to match your cupboards.  If you live in the Los Angeles County area and need maintenance, parts or repair to your range hood, go to www.chiefappliance.com. Warning Signs That Your Range May Not Be Safe

Be the first to comment

Every year, about 800,000 ranges are sold to consumers that are unsafe, but how can you know if you are one of the unlucky ones?  RangeThere are certain signs that will tell you that your stove is not working properly and might even be a hazard. They are as follows:

  • If you have a gas range and find that your eyes and/or nose are constantly irritated, there may be a leak somewhere and you need to call for assistance immediately. You might also be suffering from carbon monoxide poisoning. For any stove, if you feel dizzy or lightheaded, your stove may be polluting the air and you need to leave the house immediately.
  • If the top of the range becomes very hot when the oven is on, there is a problem with your range.
  • If the range seems lighter than you’re used to or seems to wobble, it could be easily tipped and injure you or someone in your household. Choice magazine ran an article recently warning consumers of this hazard.
  • If you purchased an electric stove and the oven won’t heat up or the burners won’t go on, it indicates that there may be a short in the system.
  • If you have a ventless gas stove and you find that the air quality in your home is poor – this is a common complaint about this type of stove. Canada has banned ventless appliances, but they are still sold in the United States.
  • Knobs on the stove come off too easily.

Finally, if there is a recall on your stove, don’t use it. Some range hazards are created by you and should be taken care of immediately. These include:

  • You have an overloaded outlet, if two or more major appliances are plugged into the same outlet.
  • You find frayed chords connecting the range to the outlet.
  • Smoke from the oven when baking indicates that there is likely a build-up of grease inside. This is a potential fire hazard.
  • The oven door won’t close properly, so whatever you bake does not cook in the allotted time.
  • Food and other debris have built up on the burners and smoke arises when you turn them on.
  • Your stove is quite old and often needs repairs.

Many of these should be taken care of by you as soon as possible. Make sure that your range is cleaned regularly as well to avoid any potential hazards. As soon as you notice food or grease spills, let the oven cool and wipe them up.  If you purchase a good range, proper care and maintenance will keep it operating effectively and you shouldn’t have any serious problems.

Things You Can Fix Yourself For Your Range

Be the first to comment

There are a number of potential problems you can run into with your gas or electric range, but many of them you can fix yourself. Before you attempt any repairs, make sure the power or gas is turned off first. Some things you should be able to fix include:

  • If a burner on an electric stove doesn’t work, you need to determine how it is wired. If it is direct-wired, you need to pull out the element to get to the insulator. Once you’ve opened it, inspect both halves. If the element is the plug-in type, take a look at the prongs first. If they look burned or appear damaged, you need to replace them. If they look fine, put the element back in place. Sometimes, this is enough to get it working again. If not, you need to replace it. If you have a range with a glass top over the elements, you need to lift it to get at the wiring. Carefully disconnect the receptacle and replace it with a new one.

  • If you have a gas range and the ignition fails to turn on the burners, there may be a problem with the igniter or burner, or the pilot light is out.

  • If the burner ports seem to be clogged, you can use a thin wire or needle to open them.

  • If the oven and/or broiler don’t heat up, the pilot light is likely out on gas ranges. On electric stoves, this can indicate a blown fuse or that the circuit breaker needs to be reset.

  • If you bake something in the oven and it is not ready in the allotted time, the capillary bulb has probably been pushed out of place or the vent is blocked. If neither one seem to be the problem, check that you set the temperature correctly.

  • If your meat or other items don’t broil as they should, you need to check the thermostat. Also, ensure that you’ve put the rack in the appropriate position.

  • If the power goes out and when it comes back on the burners on your gas range won’t work, you can restart them yourself. Turn the control to Start and light the burner head.

  • If you find that your oven smokes while baking, whatever you are broiling may be too close to the burner or the broiler drawer needs cleaning.

  • If your range wobbles, you can correct this by adjusting the feet underneath.

To keep your range operating at peak performance, you need to keep it clean as well. However, if something still goes wrong, you can refer to the owner’s manual to help you understand how your range works. If you cannot fix the problem yourself, it is time to call a professional.

Everyday Maintenance of Major Appliances

Be the first to comment

You have a lot of appliances in your home, and performing small everyday maintenance tasks can potentially save you large appliance repair bills.  Often when someone says “appliance”, it evokes images of blenders and toasters.  But major appliances don’t sit on counters.  They are refrigerators, ovens and ranges, washers and dryers, air conditioners and furnaces.

Kitchen Appliances

Each major unit in your house needs regular maintenance in addition to professional appliance maintenance.  With frequent home maintenance it’s often possible to anticipate or prevent major outages which can disrupt your life and create high appliance service bills.  There are a variety of routine maintenance jobs that don’t take much time, but will keep your appliances humming efficiently.

Maintaining a Kenmore or Sears dishwasher is typical of the care all dishwashers need.  You should watch for mineral deposits that can accumulate inside the dishwasher.  Also watch for weakened rubber hoses.

Refrigerators need to always have free air circulation around the coils and condenser.  Dirty coils on any refrigerator, whether it’s a Kelvinator or a Whirlpool or any other brand, will seriously impact the ability of the unit to maintain cold temperatures.

Ovens, from the less expensive Frigidaire to the more expensive Wolf, must be kept clean.  Baked on food can cause the heating element to overload.

You should make sure the gaskets on dishwasher, refrigerator and oven doors are always flexible and unbroken.  Broken seals impact the ability of the unit to maintain cold or hot temperatures.  This can quickly shorten the life of the appliance making it work much harder than should be necessary.

Washer and dryers must be kept clean and free of lint and dust also.  Always clean the lint catchers every time you wash or dry.  Make sure the venting hose on the dryer is properly installed too.  This is a frequent problem in homes, because owners forget to look behind the dryer to make sure the venting hose is still connected.   An accumulation of lint behind the dryer can become a fire hazard.  Also, a vent that is jammed between the wall and dryer can end up shutting off the venting and the moist air has nowhere to go.  You’ll know when this happens, because your clothes won’t dry.

Of course, air conditioners and furnaces must be maintained also.  Appliance parts for these units can be expensive if something major, like a compressor, stops working.  Furnace and air conditioning filters must be changed regularly.  When they become clogged with dust, the motors are forced to overwork.  Coils must be vacuumed and all outside air circulation vents kept free of debris.

Air conditioners and furnaces, like the Carrier and Bryant, are typical of most units.  Ductwork must be kept clean and all hoses and belts kept in working order.  Though you can keep air flow free of obstruction, some professional appliance maintenance should be scheduled periodically.

When you need appliance maintenance in LA County, West Coast Chief Repair is locally owned and experienced in maintaining most major appliance brands.  We can supply brand new factory authorized appliance replacement parts, check motors and electronic boards, and generally keep your units operating efficiently.
