Furnaces tend to be the one thing in your home that can be neglected. Out of sight, out of mind as they say. However, your furnace may get your attention by making various sounds.

If you hear a screeching noise, it may be that you have a problem with the motor, or it might be a bearing in the motor that is making the noise.

If you hear a metallic chirping noise, it may just be a natural noise that the motor or the blower wheel of the fan makes when the heat first kicks on. You might be able to solve this problem yourself by wiggling the wheel, which may be out of alignment. You should also check that the mounting plate is not warped and rubbing against the blower wheel. As well, check that the motor mounts are not loose and the bearings are in good shape.

If you hear a noisy rattling sound when your furnace shuts off, it is probably the metal parts to your furnace cooling down. However, it may be something more serious and you should call a furnace repairperson.

If you hear a clanging noise, the problem is probably in the pipes, rather than the furnace itself. This may be caused by contraction of the pipes when the furnace turns off and the pipes cool down.

Have a old gas furnace up in the rafters of my home. The fan assembly became shot and lead to a full motor replacement. Actually to the shock of the technician. The motor was actually more powerful then it should have been. I think he said it was a 8hp motor. He replaced it with a 6hp now it works like a dream.
Prior to the old motors death the thing would hum this most horrid noise…

From what I read in the article, my furnace might have a cracked belt; it started making clunking noise and wouldn’t blow air. Unfortunately, this happened on a 90-degree day, so I didn’t have A/C for the first time in 8 years and I’m miserable. At least I’ll have some idea what could be wrong, so maybe I won’t get ripped off by the furnace guy. Not trying to be cynical, but single women are often easy targets when things go wrong in their house, with their car, etc., and not knowing what a reason price might be for a particular repair. Had the ducts cleaned about 6 moths ago and since then when the furn.is running i hear what sounds like a radio/tv program talking in a low muffled tone. not sure how and whybut when the furn shuts done nothing is heard. times that the sound are heard isjearly morning and sometimes around 10:00pm . I checked all the rooms but can’t put my finger on it..all of the radios,tv’s,comp,clock radios are shut done and I know that you need power and a reciver to transmitte sound but ZI just don’t know where to start
