Shopping for a Refrigerator on a Budget

By Appliance Chief | August 9, 2007

Shopping for a refrigerator can be a daunting task, with so many makes, models and designs to choose from. And if you’re on a limited budget, that task becomes even more difficult. Refrigerator

Here are some tips you can follow to make this job a lot easier:

First of all, don’t look for a cheap refrigerator at a well-known store or a large appliance center. The only cheaper refrigerators they might have in stock are those they put into a scratch and dent sale, but they will still cost you a fair amount.

One of the best ways to buy a cheap refrigerator is to go directly to the manufacturer and purchase one wholesale. This cuts out the middleman, so you can get a better deal than if you bought a fridge retail. If you want a fridge with a frost-free freezer, you will likely find one that has approximately 7.5 cubic feet inside for about $300. For about $400, you can probably get one that is approximately 8.8 cubic feet.To find a cheap refrigerator, you should also consider buying one on sale, though it might still cost you more than you really want to pay. For just under $500, you should be able to get a standard top freezer refrigerator.

Some of these models do go all the way up to about $1,800 particularly for the stainless steel kind, so make sure you let the salesperson know what price range you’re looking at.

If you are a single person and don’t keep much food in your house or apartment, you might want to consider purchasing a compact model. Some of these types of refrigerators will fit right under the kitchen counter. You should be able to pick one of these up for less than $200.

Another option is to scan your local newspaper or a used appliance booklet often found in supermarkets to find a fridge that is significantly cheaper. You must be careful though. You will need to consider the make and model of these fridges, because you may have difficulty in the future if you need to have it serviced. The fridge may be a lesser-known make and model or it may be one that is not made anymore.

You will also find that some of the older used models of refrigerators don’t have frost-free freezers. As well, older refrigerators may be odd sizes and will likely be significantly smaller inside. Overall, just make sure that you get your money’s worth, as you probably won’t get a warranty on a used fridge. If you would like to know more about purchasing a refrigerator on a budget, you need to call a professional.

In Los Angeles County, you will want to go to www.chiefappliance.com. West Coast Chief Appliance also sells various models of top quality refrigerators and has service technicians who are available even at night, and on weekends and holidays for no extra charge to do repairs.
