Buying The Right Washer for Your Family

Posted in Washer . Washer Repair by Appliance Chief

When looking for a new clothes washer, it is most important that you take your own needs into consideration. A good washer should be around for 10 years or more, so make your choice carefully. Samsung WasherHere are some things you should consider:

If you have a big family and always have lots of clothes to wash, you should be looking at a washer with an extra large or super-sized tub. More capacity means extra clothes can be thrown into the wash without cramming things into the washer. These washers are also ideal for washing bedspreads, fluffy comforters, throw rugs, towels and other bulky items.

Which would be more convenient for you – a top load or a front load washer? Or would you rather have a washer that you can stack with a dryer?  You need to decide which one of these best suits your needs. You may also want a washer with adjustable legs to ensure that the machine sits properly.

If you are concerned with saving energy, make sure you ask questions.  Some washers use only ¼ as much water and about 28 per cent of the energy used by most standard models. You must also decide whether you want an electric washer or a more energy efficient gas model

If saving money is your primary concern, you should consider purchasing a washer on sale or one that offers a rebate. You should be able to find a top-loading washer with a large tub for as little as $300 and a similar front-loading washer for about $400. You should also be able to get a super capacity washer for about $550. As well, there is a twin tub washer that will hold up to 10 lbs. that costs approximately $300.   To save money, you might also consider purchasing a used washer. However, if you go this route, try to find a brand name washer so getting replacement parts won’t be a hassle. You can also find cheaper washers by purchasing one directly from the manufacturer at a wholesale price.

If you don’t have much space, you should opt for a compact washer with a tub that is .91 cubic feet. For this one, the washer has a hose that connects to your sink and three water levels for your convenience.

If money is no object, you might opt for one of the more expensive models with all the bells and whistles. Top-loading washers with large tubs and similar front-loading machines can go as high as $3,000 to $4,000. Some have up to 18 cycles, choice of various water levels, and numerous temperature setting and fabric options. Other features include digital controls and sensors.

One final note: For all new washers, make sure you purchase a minimum three-year warranty that covers labor, parts and service.
